What Drives Her: Amy Lipton
Feb 8th 2021
She's taking golf fashion to new heights. Meet Amy Lipton, Founder of Amy Sports apparel.
Amy Sport was launched in 2017, because she could never find fashionable high-performance athletic wear to fit her petite frame. If you think being petite just means standing 5'4" tall or under or wearing a size 2, then think again. The truth is, petite is a proportion and not just a size. You could be 5'8" and still wear a petite size if you have a shorter torso or shorter leg length. Our CEO/Founder, Christina Thompson is 5'10" and loves wearing the Marissa Skort. It really is for all women!
Her styles are designed to have multipurpose appeal. You can wear them on the court or course, but can easily be worn for travel, happy hour, the office or any place in between.
We chatted with Amy about how she got started in golf and what inspired her to start Amy Sport. Hope you enjoy learning more about the woman behind Amy Sport and what drives her!
Q1: How/why did you start playing golf?
As a kid, my Dad would play golf every Sunday morning with his friends. I was curious but I never played until I graduated from college and started playing with a friend who was a fantastic golfer. I fell in love with the game. I loved the challenge. I loved being outside - we mostly walked - and I loved that you could play with someone at a different skill level and still enjoy it. Then I moved into New York City for work and lost touch with the game. It wasn't until I moved out to California a few years ago that I really started playing again. I was instantly hooked.
Q2: What inspired you to start Amy Sport?
I'm a petite and I could never find golf clothes that fit, let alone fashionable, functional, high-quality golf clothes that fit. I basically looked like a potato sack in most brands. (ROFL) Everything required alterations, which changed the integrity of the garment. After doing research I identified a large gap in the market for petites (basically 5'6" and under).
Q3: What were some challenges you faced in the beginning and how did you overcome them?
I was fortunate to cull together a lot of experience across starting up businesses, technology and marketing from my career at IBM and other technology companies, and really, just having a keen understanding of what women like myself want. The biggest challenge was finding capital to get started.
Q4 Where do you find inspiration to stay motivated and creative each season?
The amazing women who wear our clothes, and the amazing women entrepreneurs we partner with, inspire their best. Nothing feels better than when your clients say "I got my new outfit and I LOVE IT! When I wear it everyone compliments me."
Q5: What is your absolute favorite item?
Toughest question you've asked. I love our sleeveless dress. It looks great golfing or doing just about anything, even going to the grocery store. It's easy to just slip on and instantly look good and since it's got pockets for golf, it's super functional for everyday wear too. The signature zipper really helps to dress it up for going out too. You can find me wearing them just about every day.
Q6: If you could go back and tell yourself one thing before starting your business, what would it be?
What took you so long?
Q7: How do you want women to feel when wearing your clothes?
I want them to feel empowered to look and feel their best.
Q8: How do you balance work and life?
I love what I do so it doesn't feel like work. That said, I stay focused on taking care of myself, eating well, exercising and spending time with people who lift my spirits - like you! so that I'm able to accomplish everything else in the business that needs to be done.
Q9: Do you have a mantra that you could share with us?
Patience, passion, perseverance, purpose. Thank you Christina for being such a great partner and friend.
